Jeepneys & Low Leaf – “We Are Mangoes” Interview & Music Video Release
Need motivation? Love Mangoes? Feast your senses- Two of our girl crushes came together to produce something magically delicious! Musician, designer, and artist Jeepneys teamed up with Harpist, rapper, style icon Low Leaf to bring you the most stylish tropical power anthem to take you to your next level because YOU CAN, (and who doesn’t like Mangoes?). The video provides endless eye candy with colors, prisms, vegetation, style, mirrors, dancing, and mangoes! Most importantly, I see the main characters as my spirit warriors: determined feminine creatures paving their path to greatness with style, fun, and mangoes. Very Browntourage!
In honor of the video release, we are also bringing you an exclusive interview with Jeepneys:
Where were you born?
Outer space.
When did you start making music?
I think that music is in the vibrations. So since the birth of the universe.
Physicality and visuals are a huge part of your musical experience. What comes first?
Its a visual, its a movement. Its visual and its physical all at the same time.
I dance as much as I’m jamming when I’m writing a song. The movements are just as important as the composition.
As the newest member of Black Salt Collective, how did you first get with them?
I started stalking adee’s band the new bloods. I was in a post-punkey band at the time. we were 3 asian women in this post punk new wavy kind of band. I found out about new bloodz and I was like fuck we have to met them this is too real and they started stalking us and we ended up going to Portland to play with them and it was love at first sight between our bands.
They had an amazing qpoc retreat in 2008 in portland and I helped organize it started Mother Popcorn for that band.
How do you build the community that allows you to tour? Do you have one scene? Does Twitter diversify your audience?
This time that we are living in, for me anyway, its like I can’t put all my chips into one slot machine. It’s been a really rich experience and I feel blessed every day. I think being eclectic helps a lot. So I have different communities from all the different music I’ve played over the years (punk, house and techno, now doing avant guard shit). So you keep friends, and make friends. Its challenging, but a lot easier than you think to just like figure shit out. Just ask everybody, out of 100 people 1 person knows somebody somewhere. It’s hard work but it’s a lot of fun!
What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen your music inspire?
The last show in berlin we played was tight, it was good. I think jeepneys was instrumental to the craziness, but I think the MDMA punchbowl was maybe more important to the party vibe. Berlin, that’s their new thing right now.
Your parents moved to Switzerland after the Bush years and you’ve been spending lots of time there, how’s that for a musical retreat?
I’ve been on this tropical cloud from outer space lately. the music is funny cuz the music doesn’t change that much but the context changes with the performance. but its about to change really soon.
