Bindi’s R Us

The 90s are trending, and you know what that mean, SO IS 90s CULTURAL APPROPRIATION!!!@!@!@! (✿◠‿◠) (◡‿◡✿)

The first pic is one that trashes my dashboard because I follow a lot of fashion tumblrs. Then there are pictures of current scene girls (brown or not) sporting bindis as if they get down with brown like that and can sport their cosmic lita jeffrey campbells too (barf be on all litas). Are they paying homage to the culture it comes from, or is it a fashion statement and visual homage to tumblr-note-prostituting in general? (not that that’s a bad thing, we’re sex-positive)

There are times when this is particularly disturbing, and this Urban Outfitters blog post does a pretty good job of being a star example of that.  On Gwen Stefani, “She is the ultimate inspiration for so many girls wearing bindis back then and even today.” Oh wait so it wasn’t her:

UO is telling tweeny tumblr girls that bindis are “one of the coolest pieces of jewelry” and they should be quick to “rock a bindi” while explaining Molly Soda’s history with it more than it’s actual history as a cultural marker. If you’re thoughtful about it and you rep it as a signifier of the 6th chakra of wisdom/intuition, props, but if you’re trying to get notes on tumblr, you need to check your wisdom.
