Fanciulla Gentile, Adee Roberson, and Grace Rosario Perkins are great artists and great friends who are redefining “culture” in art. They each come from different parts of the world and different experiences, but they come together and support eachother through Black Salt Collective (an art collective focusing women of color ). By showcasing contemporary narratives, the collective breaks athropological pidgeon-holes of ethnic art that presumes “Oh this person is Navajo, they make this kind of art.” Though you may not be able to guess art-to-face, each of these women have very distinctive styles. They know who they are, respect where they came from, and make what they want- AND LET ME TELL YOU, IT ROCKS.

Yep, I was lucky enough to photograph their SF debut gallery opening at Artists Television Access this past Sunday and it was definitely a day to remember. All types of people attended the opening and were blown away by the emotion and love the artwork gave the space. Featured at the opening was a musical performance by dear friend and frequent collaborator of Black Salt Collective,Jeepneys who delivered a set I can only begin to describe as astro-tropical house.
